8 Week Moving Checklist: The Week-by-Week Timeline for a Stress-Free Move

Eight weeks sounds like a lot of time. It isn't. The buyers who start planning their move at 8 weeks out typically arrive at moving day calm and organised. The ones who start at two weeks out are scrambling to get a truck at peak pricing, packing things they should have sold three weeks ago, and showing up at the new home without a shower curtain.

This week-by-week timeline covers everything from first bookings to the first 30 days in the new home.

8 Weeks Before Moving Day

The earlier you start this phase, the more financial leverage you have.

Logistics and bookings:

  • Get at least three written estimates from FMCSA-registered moving carriers (if using full-service movers) — phone-only verbal quotes are a red flag
  • Book your moving company or truck rental and confirm in writing; end-of-month and peak summer dates (May–September) get booked fast
  • Check your building's moving-in policies: many apartment buildings or HOA-governed communities require a moving permit, elevator booking, or specific move-in window

Inventory and declutter:

  • Begin a complete household inventory — list everything room by room, and categorise for: keep, sell, donate, discard
  • Long-distance carriers charge $0.50–$0.80 per pound; reducing your load by 1,500 pounds saves $750–$1,200 in a cross-country move
  • Post large furniture on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or local buy/sell groups — allow 4–6 weeks for items to sell

Records and administration:

  • Request school records, immunisation records, and dental files if you're moving districts
  • Notify your employer's HR department of the upcoming address change for payroll and W-2 purposes
  • List all active subscriptions that ship physical items and need address updates

6 Weeks Before Moving Day

Change of address filings:

  • Submit your USPS Change of Address at moversguide.usps.com ($1.25 identity verification fee) — this can be done up to 90 days before the move date and takes 3 business days to activate, then up to 2 weeks to run smoothly
  • In the UK, register with Royal Mail's Redirection service (fees apply for 3, 6, or 12-month forwarding periods)
  • Canada Post and Australia Post offer similar mail redirect services — begin these at least 4 weeks before moving day
  • Notify your bank, credit card issuers, and investment accounts

Utilities:

  • Contact current utility providers and schedule disconnection dates (set these as "last day of occupancy" — not moving day — to keep the old home operational during packing)
  • Schedule utility connections at the new property: electricity and gas need 3–5 business days; internet and fibre require 7–14 business days for installation
  • Set up new accounts for water and waste management at the new address

Packing begins:

  • Pack non-essentials: out-of-season clothes, books, archived documents, seasonal decorations
  • Label every box on at least three sides with room name, contents, and any "OPEN FIRST" flag

4 Weeks Before Moving Day

Medical and administrative:

  • Transfer medical records, prescriptions, and veterinary records to providers in the new area
  • Update voter registration (deadlines vary significantly by state; in the US, most states require 15–30 days before an election)
  • Update your driver's licence — in most US states, you have 30–60 days after moving to update your licence address; the DMV requires your new address to be used for vehicle registration as well

Home preparation:

  • Research lock replacement options for the new property; plan to re-key or replace all exterior deadbolts before furniture is moved in
  • Confirm closing date details with your real estate attorney and lender
  • Purchase packing supplies if you haven't: boxes, tape, bubble wrap, moving pads

Continue packing:

  • Move to the second tier of non-essentials: second bedroom contents, secondary kitchen equipment, rarely-used appliances

2 Weeks Before Moving Day

Final confirmations:

  • Reconfirm booking with your moving company or truck rental — get the arrival window in writing
  • Confirm utility activation dates at the new property (especially internet — if your installation window falls after moving day, arrange a mobile hotspot)
  • Confirm with your building management or HOA if required permits are in order

Packing intensity:

  • Pack everything except the essentials you're using daily
  • Disassemble large furniture: bed frames, wardrobes, desks — this dramatically reduces loading time on moving day
  • Defrost and clean refrigerator and freezer 24–48 hours before loading

Financial preparation:

  • Prepare cash or payment method for mover tips ($4–$5 per mover per hour; approximately $100–$200 total for a full-day four-person crew)
  • Confirm whether your homeowner's or renter's insurance covers goods in transit; photograph high-value items for documentation

1 Week Before Moving Day

Final packing:

  • Pack your "first night box" — this travels in your personal car, not on the truck: toilet paper, chargers, shower curtain, towels, tools, snacks, medications, documents, clean clothes for two days
  • Pack everything remaining except what you'll use the morning of moving day

Property tasks:

  • Take current meter readings at the old property and photograph them
  • Collect any items in storage, dry cleaning, or borrowed from neighbours
  • Confirm the new property is ready for move-in — if there's a cleaning requirement or a pre-move repair, schedule it now

Build in buffer time:

  • Block off 3pm–6pm on the day before moving day as unallocated — something always needs those hours

Moving Day

Loading:

  • Keep the first night box in your car before loading starts
  • Supervise the movers' inventory manifest — verify every item is recorded before signing the Bill of Lading
  • Photograph any pre-existing furniture damage and have movers note it on the manifest
  • Take final photos of the empty old property before leaving; take final meter readings

At the new property:

  • Do a walkthrough of every room before movers begin unloading — note anything that needs attention
  • Direct movers to place furniture in its final position before unloading boxes; rearranging furniture around stacked boxes is significantly harder
  • Note any transit damage on the inventory manifest before movers leave; this is critical for any future claim

First 30 Days

Day one priorities:

  • Locate and label the main water shutoff valve, gas valve, and electrical panel
  • Re-key or replace all exterior locks — assume previous owners, contractors, and agents still have copies
  • Test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors; replace batteries
  • Check that fire extinguishers are present in kitchen, garage, and utility areas

First week:

  • Complete your change-of-address notifications for any outstanding institutions
  • Schedule internet installation if not already active
  • Register vehicles at the new address (deadlines vary by state)

First month:

  • Update your driver's licence address (US: typically 30–60 days from move date)
  • Locate and file warranty documentation for any appliances included in the purchase
  • Review the home inspection report and schedule any follow-up repairs or inspections noted as priorities

The tasks that go wrong in a move are almost always the ones people assumed they had time for. An 8-week timeline turns an overwhelming process into a series of manageable weekly sprints.

The Moving Day Toolkit includes this full 8-week countdown as a printable interactive checklist, alongside a moving budget tracker, inventory spreadsheet, and change-of-address directory for US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
