Change of Address Checklist When Moving: Everyone You Need to Notify
Most people update their bank and submit the USPS form, then consider the job done. Three months later they're still receiving credit card statements at the old address, their car registration renewal went to the previous owner, and their voter registration is still in the wrong county. A change-of-address notification is not a single task — it's a multi-week administrative project with real consequences if you miss something.
Start with USPS Mail Forwarding
The USPS Change of Address (COA) is the foundation. Submit it at moversguide.usps.com — the only official portal. There's a $1.25 identity verification fee charged to a credit or debit card. The billing address on the card must match either your old or new address. Do not use third-party sites that charge $30–$40 for the same process; they're not affiliated with USPS and are often rejected.
What forwarding covers:
- First-Class Mail and Priority Mail: forwarded for 12 months at no charge
- Periodicals (magazines): forwarded for 60 days
- Marketing mail: not forwarded
You can submit your COA up to 90 days before your move date and up to 30 days after. Mail forwarding typically activates within 3 business days but can take up to 2 weeks to run consistently.
Once submitted, USPS mails a Move Validation Letter to your old address and a Customer Notification Letter to your new address. If you receive a validation letter but didn't submit a COA, someone may have fraudulently redirected your mail — report it immediately at managemymove.usps.com/disputes.
UK, CA, AU, NZ equivalents: Royal Mail's redirection service runs approximately £39.99 for 3 months. Canada Post offers mail forwarding for 4 months at $55 CAD. Australia Post Redirections start at AU$33 for 3 months. New Zealand Post offers redirections starting at NZ$35 for 3 months.
Government and Regulatory Bodies
These notifications affect your legal compliance, not just your mail:
- Tax authorities: In the US, file IRS Form 8822 (Change of Address) by mail — there's no online option. In Canada, update your CRA My Account profile. HMRC (UK) and ATO (Australia) both accept online updates.
- DMV / DVLA / Transport authority: Most US states require you to update your driver's license address within 10–30 days of moving. Many states charge a small fee for a replacement license with the new address.
- Voter registration: Don't assume your registration transfers automatically. Many states require a new registration or at minimum an address update, and deadlines before elections can be as short as 15–30 days.
- Social Security Administration: Update online at ssa.gov/myaccount or by calling 1-800-772-1213. This is particularly important if you receive SSA benefits.
- Passport office: Not urgent unless you're traveling soon, but keeping passport records current is good practice.
Financial Institutions
Missing a financial notification is the one most likely to cause lasting damage — statements going to the wrong address create security exposure.
- All banks and credit unions (checking, savings, money market)
- Every credit card issuer
- Investment accounts (brokerage, Roth IRA, 401k plan administrator)
- Mortgage lender and servicer
- HELOC provider if applicable
- Insurance providers: homeowners, auto, life, health, umbrella
- Student loan servicer
For retirement accounts, update directly through the plan portal, not just through your employer's HR system — these are separate records.

Medical and Healthcare Providers
- Primary care physician
- Dentist and orthodontist
- All specialists (cardiologist, dermatologist, physical therapist, etc.)
- Pharmacy — particularly important for ongoing prescription transfers
- Vision provider
- Veterinarian and pet microchip registry (microchips are useless if the contact details on file are outdated)
Professional and Legal Contacts
- Employer HR and payroll — especially critical for W-2 delivery and direct deposit records
- Pension fund or retirement plan administrator
- Estate planning attorney and CPA
- Any professional licenses or memberships tied to your old address
Utilities and Services at the New Address
Setting up services at the new property is distinct from notifying existing institutions of an address change, but it belongs in the same workflow:
- Electricity and natural gas (schedule 3–5 business days in advance)
- Municipal water and sewer
- Internet and broadband (allow 7–14 business days — this is the one that consistently catches people off guard)
- Waste management and recycling collection
- Home security monitoring company
Subscriptions and Online Accounts
The most commonly forgotten category:
- Amazon and other online retailers (default shipping address)
- Netflix, Spotify, Disney+, Apple — billing address and profile
- Gym membership
- Professional associations and trade unions
- Meal kit and subscription box services
- Magazine and newspaper subscriptions
A Practical Approach to Not Missing Anyone
The easiest way to audit your full list: go through 12 months of bank and credit card statements line by line. Every vendor that charges you has your address on file. Flag anyone you haven't notified yet.
The Moving Day Toolkit includes a pre-populated change-of-address directory organized by category — government, financial, medical, utilities, and subscriptions — with direct links to the relevant update portals for US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It's designed to be worked through systematically over the 2–4 weeks before and after your move, rather than tried all at once on moving day when you're already exhausted.
Most address change failures aren't from negligence — they're from having no structured list. Once you have every category written down, the updates themselves take 5–10 minutes each.
